Former Labor Minister Peter Mandelson arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office
British police arrested former Labor Minister Peter Mandelson on suspicion of misconduct in public office following property searches in Camden and Wiltshire.
The Metropolitan Police confirmed a 72-year-old man was detained on Feb. 23 and taken to a London station for questioning; no charges have been filed.
The probe was reportedly triggered by the release of roughly three million pages of documents by the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ).
Emails in the cache allegedly show Mandelson shared sensitive Downing Street communications with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein while serving in the cabinet of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
The messages included discussions of tax policy, potential £20 billion ($27.4 billion) in asset sales and advance notice of Brown’s planned resignation, raising concerns about the disclosure of market-sensitive government information.
