MANCHESTER, England (CN) — The European Court of Human Rights is questioning the U.K. government over its 2019 decision to strip Shamima Begum of her British citizenship, raising fresh scrutiny of a case that has long divided courts, politicians and the public.
The court confirmed it is examining whether Britain violated Article 4 of the European Convention on Human Rights, which bans slavery and human trafficking, when then-Home Secretary Sajid Javid stripped Begum of her citizenship on national security grounds.
