DHS ends temporary protected status for 1,400 Yemenis

The Department of Homeland Security on Friday announced that it is ending Temporary Protected Status for Yemenis living in the U.S., about 1,400 in total.Yemenis have been continually protected from deportation under TPS since 2015, The Hill news outlet reported. TPS protects foreign nationals from being deported back to their native countries that are experiencing a natural disaster or civil unrest.
DHS said that TPS for Yemen will end in 60 days, after it began over 10 years ago due to “an ongoing armed conflict.”
The department said that Yemenis benefiting from TPS who are in the U.S. without any other lawful basis have 60 days to voluntarily leave. Yemenis are encouraged to use the CBP Home app to report their self-deportation from the U.S., which includes a complimentary plane ticket, a $2,600 exit bonus, and potential future opportunities for legal immigration.
After the 60 days, DHS may arrest and deport any Yemenis who no longer have a legal status in the U.S.
“After reviewing conditions in the country and consulting with appropriate U.S. government agencies, I determined that Yemen no longer meets the law’s requirements to be designated for Temporary Protected Status,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said.
“Allowing TPS Yemen beneficiaries to remain temporarily in the United States is contrary to our national interest. TPS was designed to be temporary, and this administration is returning TPS to its original temporary intent. We are prioritizing our national security interests and putting America first.”
