Independent Chris Taylor won a seat Tuesday night on Wisconsin’s state Supreme Court, the Associated Press projects, expanding a liberal majority on the court, with help from the state Democratic Party’s endorsement.Taylor defeated the Republican endorsed Independent Maria Lazar with 60.8% of the vote, compared to Lazar’s 39.1%.
Taylor’s victory flipped retiring Justice Rebecca Bradley’s seat and gives liberal justices a 5-2 majority on the swing state’s highest court, putting the majority out of reach for conservatives until at least 2030, according to NBC News.
The new Wisconsin Supreme Court justice served as a state appeals court judge and previously worked as a Democratic state legislator. Lazar is an appeals court judge who worked in former Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s administration.
Taylor will now serve a 10-year term.
