Court declines to block Utah map redraw that could hand Dems a seat

A three-judge panel of the Utah District Court on Monday declined to stay a redrawn set of congressional maps in Utah that could hand Democrats a winnable race.”Because we conclude Plaintiffs have failed to demonstrate a likelihood of success on the merits, and because the Purcell principle counsels this court not to enjoin a state’s election laws in the period close to an election, we DENY Plaintiffs’ preliminary injunction motion,” the panel wrote in its decision.

The court decision makes it likely that Utah voters will see the current set of congressional maps in November, which include a district that favors Democrats.
The current redraw is the result of a court order from a state judge. The case could reach the Supreme Court and prove pivotal in the battle for a narrowly divided House.
