Congress to send delegation to Denmark this week as Danish, Greenland envoys come to US

A team of Democratic and Republican lawmakers are expected to visit Denmark this week to discuss Greenland as Danish and Greenland envoys are slated to come to Washington, D.C. for talks.The congressional delegation is expected to be led by Delaware Democratic Sen. Chris Coons and will also feature Democratic Sens. Dick Durbin of Illinois, and Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire. Republican Sens. Thom Tillis of North Carolina and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, both of whom are frequently at odds with President Donald Trump, are also expected to be on the trip, according to The Hill. 
Three Democratic lawmakers are also expected to visit Copenhagen on Friday and Saturday, including Gregory Meeks of New York, and Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania, where the delegation will meet with high-level Danish and Greenlandic government officials and business leaders, the Associated Press reported.
The delegation is expected to tell the leaders that “we understand the value of the partnership we have long had with them, and in no way seek to interfere in their internal discussions about the status of Greenland,” Coons told the Associated Press.
“As long as we have been constructive and respectful allies, the Danes have been open arms with us on security and investment and the region,” he continued. “I think the only thing that has changed is the recent statements by the president and the extent to which it seems to have gone from casual to serious, and I just think it’s important for us to be heard as strongly supporting NATO and our alliance.”
The trip comes as President Trump floats possible options to acquire Greenland from Denmark, claiming that it is vital to national security in the face of Russian and Chinese interest in the region.
Trump has suggested that military options remain on the table if the United States cannot obtain the island through negotiation.
