Scotland’s rejection of assisted suicide—for the third time since 2010—is a monumentally important victory. The 69-57 vote against was foreshadowed by the assurance that loosening protections for the “terminally ill” inevitably led to an assault against the medically vulnerable and, most recently, even children.
The rapid-fire descent into chaos —otherwise known as Canada’s MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying)—was brought up over and over as proof positive that once assisted suicide left the station, trying to stop it from spreading was like trying to stop a runway train.
