    A watershed verdict: Meta held accountable for platform harms to children, sparking new privacy debates

    A New Mexico jury has ordered Meta to pay $375 million for violating state consumer protection laws by misleading users about platform safety and enabling child sexual exploitation.
    The landmark verdict is the first to find Meta liable for harms stemming from its platform design and internal decisions, following a seven-week trial.
    Evidence showed Meta employees and external experts repeatedly warned about risks, but the company prioritized engagement and profit over implementing stronger child safety measures.
    The ruling opens a new legal front against tech giants, challenging the broad liability protections they have historically enjoyed under Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act.
    Meta faces a second trial phase in May where the state will seek court-mandated platform changes, including effective age verification and predator removal tools, raising new privacy debates and fears about children being tracked.
