It’s closing time for a once-popular American beer. The final batch of Schlitz will roll out of the brewery on Saturday, according to Fox News. This will bring to an end 177 years of brewing.
The company was founded in 1849 and became a dominant beer brand throughout the 20th Century. It was advertised under the slogan “the beer that made Milwaukee famous.” Following World War II, it was one of the world’s most popular beers.
The brand began to slip in the 1970s in the face of stiff competition from Budweiser, Miller and Pabst. Some of the decline has been attributed to a change in formula, dubbed “the Schlitz” mistake.
The company was sold multiple times before Pabst acquired it in 1999.
