Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., on Wednesday introduced a constitutional amendment to limit eligibility to serve in Congress, hold Senate-confirmed posts, and become a federal judge to natural-born citizens.Mace highlighted that the president and vice president already face the same natural-born requirement and pointed to several foreign-born lawmakers, whom she believed should not be in Congress. Among those were, Democratic Reps, Ilhan Omar, Minn.; Pramila Jayapal, Wash.; and Shri Thanedar, Mich.
“The people writing America’s laws, confirming America’s judges, and representing America on the world stage should have one loyalty: America,” she said. “Not any other country.
For too long we have allowed foreign born members to hold seats in this government while making clear they are America last, not America first. We see it every day. This constitutional amendment will put an end to it.”
Mace’s amendment is unlikely to become law, but comes as the Republican gubernatorial primary in South Carolina enters its home stretch. Mace is seeking the Republican nomination in a contentious contest that also includes Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Attorney General Alan Wilson, and Rep. Ralph Norman.
The gubernatorial primary is set for June 9.
