President Donald Trump on Wednesday quipped that he could run for prime minister of Israel following the expiration of his presidential term.Maybe after I do this I’ll go to Israel and run for prime minister. I had a poll this morning, I’m 99%,” he said.
Trump has previously joked that he may seek the presidency of Venezuela after leaving the White House, asserting he was popular in that country for removing President Nicolás Maduro.
Israel’s electoral system would not permit Trump to independently seek the prime minister’s office. Were he to somehow obtain citizenship, he would need to become leader of a political party first and secure enough support in the Knesset for his bloc to form a government.
Throughout his tenure, Trump has positioned himself as a supporter of Israel and has worked to strengthen ties with that country, including through diplomatic efforts to normalize relations between Jerusalem and neighboring Muslim nations.
