Chinese security officials and the Secret Service on Thursday experienced a brief standoff after the Chinese officials blocked an armed Secret Service agent from entering Beijing’s Temple of Heaven, according to news reports. The incident occurred during President Donald Trump’s two-day summit in China, which takes place Thursday and Friday. Trump is meeting with Chinese leader Xi Jinping during which the pair are expected to discuss the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, fentanyl and trade negotiations.
Reporters in China said the Secret Service was blocked from entering the temple with a weapon, which triggered an “intense standoff” that delayed entry into the site for over a half-hour because of heated discussions.
The incident was not the only standoff that reporters have seen on the trip.
Telegraph reporter Connor Stringer said on X that the press has seen “several intense confrontations since being here,” and “several times the Chinese tried to stop US reporters and staff from leaving their positions and joining the motorcade.”
The White House and Secret Service have not commented on the standoff.
