The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) filed a lawsuit against the New York Times (NYT). on Tuesday, May 5, alleging that the newspaper discriminated against a White male employee by passing him over for a promotion due to his race and sex, according to federal court documents.
The complainant, a reporter at the paper since 2014, applied for the role of deputy property editor. According to the complaint, the position was given to a multiracial woman who had no prior experience in property journalism. The final candidate pool consisted entirely of women and ethnic minorities, chosen on the basis of race and sex to meet diversity targets, the complaint states.
