Trump meeting with Brazilian leader ends with canceled press briefing

President Donald Trump and Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva left a bilateral meeting Thursday at the White House without a press briefing, despite one being scheduled earlier in the day. It was not immediately clear what prompted the cancellation of the press briefing but Trump claimed in a social media post that the meeting “went very well” and the pair discussed trade and tariffs.
“Just concluded my meeting with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the very dynamic President of Brazil,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “We discussed many topics, including Trade and, specifically, Tariffs. The meeting went very well. Our representatives are scheduled to get together to discuss certain key elements. Additional meetings will be scheduled over the coming months, as necessary.”
The meeting comes after Trump imposed a 50% duty on Brazilian exports to the United States last year, but alleviated some of them given concerns regarding American food costs. The Supreme Court later ruled Trump’s reciprocal tariffs were unconstitutional.
