A major German shipping firm stated Tuesday that it was not prepared to resume normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz after the U.S. Navy began escorting ships through the waterway. At President Donald Trump’s direction, U.S. vessels this week began escorting ships out of the Persian Gulf. The American operation coincided with Iranian strikes across the gulf, despite the war technically being in a state of ceasefire.
“At this point in time our risk assessment remains unchanged. Transits through the Strait of Hormuz are for the moment not possible for our ships,” Hapag-Lloyd AG said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.
Hapag-Lloyd is one of the largest shipping firms in the world and operates 301 vessels along 133 routes worldwide.
Major shipping firms have suspended normal bookings in the region amid the Iran war, which is technically ongoing despite a nominal ceasefire.
