The defense team for Cole Tomas Allen, the suspect in the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner shooting, has filed a motion asking a judge to remove him from suicide watch, arguing the conditions violate his due process rights. At an emergency hearing that is scheduled for Monday, Allen’s attorneys are expected to ask Zia Faruqui to end the suicide precautions, which place him in a “safe cell” under 24-hour lockdown, Fox News reported.
He would not be able to access a jail tablet to communicate with family or friends.
“Similarly, because Mr. Allen is not permitted to retain personal items while in the cell, it is counsel’s understanding that he cannot review documents that counsel leave with him, thus hindering his ability to assist in his own defense,” his defense said.
