Regularly engaging in multiple types of physical activity, not simply increasing total exercise volume, may reduce the risk of death, according to a study published April 27 in BMJ Medicine. Researchers analyzed data from over 100,000 participants tracked for more than 30 years through the Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. The findings indicate that variety itself was associated with a 19% lower risk of death from all causes after accounting for total activity levels, the study authors reported. [1]Activity Variety and Mortality Risk

Participants who reported the most diverse range of activities had a 19% lower risk of death from any cause compared with those who engaged in fewer activity types, according to the study. The association was not linear: benefits of total physical activity leveled off after about 20 MET-hours per week, suggesting an optimal range beyond which additional activity provided diminishing returns. Relationships varied by cause of death, with a 13% to 41% lower risk for cardiovascular disease, cancer, and respiratory disease among those with highest variety. [1]
