A new poll released Wednesday found the supermajority of Americans questioned believe that partisan gerrymandering is a “serious” problem in the United States as redistricting efforts heat up ahead of the 2026 midterms. The Rasmussen Reports poll found 88% of likely U.S. Voters believe it is a serious problem when states deliberately redraw congressional districts to favor one party, including 65% who say it is a very serious problem.
The poll comes after Virginia voters last week narrowly approved a referendum that paves the way for a slate of congressional maps set to heavily favor the incumbent Democratic Party. But legal challenges have blocked the referendum.
Voters nationwide are very evenly divided on what party they believe is more likely to engage in gerrymandering, with 30% of Independent voters believing Republicans are more likely, 27% believe Democrats are and 36% said both parties are equally likely.
A majority of Republicans (52%) claimed Democrats are more likely to engage in partisan gerrymandering, while 47% of Democrats said Republicans are more likely.
The poll, which questioned 1,153 likely U.S. voters, was conducted on April 22-23 and April 26, 2026. It has a three percent margin of error.
