    Intermittent Fasting Study Suggests Refeeding Phase May Drive Longevity Benefits

    A new study published in Nature Communications has found that the longevity benefits of intermittent fasting in a model organism may be driven by the body’s response to eating again after a fast, rather than the fasting period itself. Researchers from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center compared Caenorhabditis elegans worms that were fed normally to those that underwent a 24-hour fast in early adulthood and were then allowed to feed again 

    . The scientists measured stored fat, gene activity related to fat metabolism, and lifespan. According to the study authors, the health-promoting effects of intermittent fasting depend on metabolic recalibration during the transition back to a fed state
