Trump on extending ceasefire: ‘Highly unlikely’

President Donald Trump on Monday said it was “highly unlikely” he would extend the ceasefire with Iran past Wednesday evening if Tehran did not reach agreement to end the conflict. The ceasefire with Iran is set to expire this week and hostilities could resume after talks in Islamabad, Pakistan, failed to result in a permanent agreement. Trump told Bloomberg on Monday that it was “highly unlikely” he would seek to renew or extend the ceasefire.
The U.S. has sought a commitment from Iran to never possess a nuclear weapon, an end to its funding of proxy groups in the region, and a reduction of its ballistic missile arsenal. The Iranians, in turn, have demanded that the U.S. withdraw from the Middle East.
The current ceasefire began in early April and came ahead of a deadline that Trump imposed to reach an agreement or begin the bombing of civilian infrastructure in Iran. The last minute deal came at the behest of Pakistan, which brokered the ceasefire, though the parties disagreed on what they had agreed to and a ceasefire in Lebanon became a sticking point for later talks.
Israel and Hezbollah have engaged in intense combat in southern Lebanon and Trump, last week, announced a separate ceasefire in that country.
