Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine on Thursday told reporters that 13 ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz had turned around in the face of the U.S. naval blockade.Trump imposed the blockade over the weekend in the wake of failed negotiations with Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan. The move represented something of a reversal from the U.S. demands that Iran open the waterway.
The captains of all these ships made the wise decision not to move transit or run this blockade,” Caine told reporters. “So far, 13 ships have made the wise choice of turning around.”
American forces have warned ships they will use force to ensure compliance with the blockade.
“If you do not comply with this blockade, we will use force. The whole of the United States Navy is ready to force compliance,” the Navy warned in an audio recording to ships in the region.
