Democrat-led states have threatened to sue President Trump over his executive order creating a nationwide list of verified eligible voters and restricting mail-in voting.”I don’t know how it can be challenged. They’ll probably challenge it,” Trump said at Tuesday night’s Oval Office signing. “You may find a rogue judge – a lot of rogue judges. Very bad, bad people. Very bad judges. But that’s the only way that can be changed, and hopefully we’ll win on appeal if it is, but I don’t see how anybody can challenge it.”
Arizona, California, Maine and Oregon immediately vowed to sue the Trump administration over the executive order, Fox News reported.
“We’re challenging it,” California Gov. Gavin Newsom posted on X on Tuesday, sharing a clip of Trump signing the order. “See you in court.”
Arizona Democratic Secretary of State Adrian Fontes told The Associated Press: “It is just wrongheaded for a president of the United States to pretend like he can pick his own voters. That’s just not how America works.”
Trump’s executive order directs the Department of Homeland Security, working with the Social Security Administration, to compile lists of eligible voters nationwide and seeks to block the U.S. Postal Service from delivering absentee ballots to voters not on state-approved rolls.
The order also calls for mail-in ballot envelopes with unique tracking barcodes and threatens to withhold federal funding from states and localities that refuse to comply.
