More than 6,000 additional troops are en route to the Middle East amid the ongoing Iran war, despite President Donald Trump’s insistence that negotiations had made progress. The war has lasted for nearly five weeks and led to the Pentagon deploying troops from all over the world to the region, including by bringing the U.S.S. Tripoli from Japan and the 82nd Airborne from the continental U.S.
The U.S.S. George H.W. Bush and three supporting destroyers set sail for the region on Tuesday, the Associated Press reported. Collectively, the four vessels account for more than 6,000 personnel.
The carrier will replace the U.S.S. Gerald Ford, which had to leave action for repairs due to multiple technical issues.
Trump has repeatedly refused to take a ground invasion off the table, though boots on the ground remain overwhelmingly unpopular with the American public.
