
ER Editor: This report has been doing the rounds in the last few days. A young Spanish woman, who was put in a group home as a teenager, was gang-raped; she tried to commit suicide subsequently and survived that attempt but was left a paraplegic. She then opted for euthanasia, and was granted that option through the courts despite her family’s protests.
This report by Second Smartest Guy suggests that she changed her mind about but was euthanized anyway. We’re not sure about this change of heart as a TV interview shortly before the deed shows she was committed to her decision. This lawyer seems to represent the parents, in which the subject of organ donation is raised as the reason why their daughter’s decision cannot be changed. As the lawyer makes clear, hospitals which perform euthanasia also financially benefit from the organ donations that ensue, thus raising a conflict of interest —
