Senate rejects latest Iran War Powers resolution amid nearly month-long conflict

The Senate rejected the latest Iran War Powers resolution Tuesday night, which would have required President Donald Trump to get permission from Congress in order to use military force on the Middle Eastern country.Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy introduced the latest resolution, which failed in a primarily party-line 47-53 split. Kentucky GOP Sen. Rand Paul and Pennsylvania Democratic Sen. John Fetterman crossed party lines, with Fetterman voting against the resolution with Republicans and Paul voting in favor of it.
The vote comes less than a month after Virginia Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine forced a similar vote on the war powers resolution, which yielded the same result.
The legislation is an attempt to rein in the Trump administration after it launched a joint attack on Iran alongside Israel. Iran has retaliated by launching missiles at Israel and U.S. military bases in the Middle East.
Murphy told reporters earlier Tuesday that Republicans are avoiding talking about the war, which has caused gas and oil prices to surge, according to The Hill.
“It’s our only opportunity to debate the war, which is tragic,” Murphy said. “And we need to continue to put Republicans on record. This war is not getting more popular as time goes on.”
