The Pentagon will maintain the National Guard presence in Washington, D.C., until 2029, through the completion of President Donald Trump’s term.Secretary of War Pete Hegseth has yet to formally approve the deployment, ABC News reported. Trump, last year, sent the National Guard to the nation’s capital in a bid to crack down on illegal immigration and rampant crime in the city.
The National Guard presence has led to protests from D.C. locals, though it has also coincided with a precipitous drop in crime in the city. Two members of the National Guard were targeted in a stabbing attack last year, leading to one fatality and one injury.
Trump awarded the Purple Heart to U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe, 24, and the late U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom, 20, during the State of the Union.
