Attorney General Pam Bondi has given a new title to Brad Schimel so that he can remain at the U.S. Attorney’s office for the Eastern District of Wisconsin, after a district court declined to invoke its power to keep him in his temporary post until the vacancy is permanently filled. In November, Bondi appointed Schimel to a 120-day term as interim U.S. attorney, which was set to expire Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
The U.S. Attorney’s office, headquartered in Milwaukee, announced Wednesday that Bondi named Schimel as the first assistant U.S. attorney in Milwaukee, a role in which he’ll continue overseeing operations.
“I am grateful for this opportunity to serve the people of the Eastern District of Wisconsin,” Schimel said in a statement. “I will continue to work tirelessly to make the entire district safer and stronger.”
Interim, acting, or first assistant U.S. attorneys are running most of the 94 federal judicial districts across the country, as Senate Democrats hold up confirmation votes on presidential appointees. According to a list on the Justice Department’s website, only 30 districts are currently led by U.S. attorneys nominated by President Trump and confirmed by the Senate.
First assistant U.S. attorneys like Schimel are currently running federal prosecutor offices in a dozen states, including California, New Mexico, Kentucky, Nevada, New York, Virginia, Vermont, and Washington.
Schimel ran as a conservative candidate for the Wisconsin Supreme Court last year, but lost to liberal candidate Susan Crawford.
