President Donald Trump on Monday said that the U.S. was unaware of the current status of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who replaced his father as Iran’s supreme leader following the U.S. strikes.”We don’t know if he’s dead,” Trump said, highlighting the conflicting information on his vital status and reports of a disfigurement.
“He would spew hate from his chair, but you’d see him a lot,” Trump said of the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Trump’s remarks came three weeks into the Iran war, which began with joint Israeli-American strikes on the country. Trump has since struggled to reopen the Strait of Hormuz in light of Iranian attacks on oil tankers.
As of press time, major American allies have refused to commit warships to a coalition to reopen the strait.
