Israel appears to be preparing for the largest boots-on-the-ground invasion of neighbor Lebanon in at least two decades, according to media reports. Tanks and troops are gathering near Israel’s northern border with the reported goal of seizing the part of Lebanon south of the Litani River and dismantling the military infrastructure of Iran-supported Hezbollah.
“We are going to do what we did in Gaza,” Axios quoted an unnamed senior Israeli military official as saying, referring to the flattening of buildings.
The attack would widen the scope of the conflict that began Feb. 28, when Israeli and U.S. fighters began pounding Tehran and other targets in Iran.
Axios broke the story based on commentary from Israeli and U.S. officials as well as on-the-ground reporting. The information has since been confirmed and reported by other media, including the Jerusalem Post.
