Rep. Kevin Kiley of California announced on Monday that he would leave the Republican Party and become an independent for the remainder of his term in Congress. He already confirmed plans to seek reelection as an independent. The Monday announcement, however, means he will sit in Congress as one, The Hill reported. Kiley plans to continue caucusing with the Republicans in order to keep his committee assignments.
Kiley cited the nationwide gerrymandering fight as his reason for leaving the party. Multiple states, led by Democrats and Republicans, have moved to redraw their maps in order to boost their respective parties’ chances in November.
His rebranding may come as California itself redraws its own congressional maps, placing Kiley in a precarious position for his own reelection.
