President Trump said Thursday that the U.S. will be involved in choosing the next leader of Iran, and that he would be supportive of the Kurds if they decide to launch an offensive inside of Iran. “I think it’s wonderful that they want to do that, I’d be all for it,” the president said during an exclusive interview with Reuters.
He added that it would be “wonderful” if the coalition of Iranian Kurdish forces based in Iraq were to cross into Iran to launch attacks on security forces there, and that their goal would be “to win.”
“If they’re going to do that, that’s good,” he said.
Trump told the outlet that he doesn’t think the next leader of Iran will be the son of the late Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s, who has emerged in Iran as a likely successor to his father, who was killed in a military strike at the start of the war.
When asked if the exiled Iranian Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi, was a possibility, Trump said, “I think everybody’s in the mix. It’s very early.”
