New York GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik and Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott sent a letter Monday to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Federal Communications Commission Chair Brendan Carr, urging them to investigate a China-backed company that allegedly misled Americans and targeted military consumers. The Republican lawmakers claimed the People’s Republic of China sponsored Anker Innovations, which is a “global smart hardware technology company” that is based in China.
The company allegedly “poses unacceptable risks to U.S. national security and consumer safety,” by inviting potential foreign surveillance into U.S. homes and targeting military consumers.
“Anker, through its Eufy brand, has a documented history of significant security vulnerabilities related to its security camera business and has been accused of misleading the public about these issues,” the lawmakers wrote. “In 2025, the State of New York secured a $450,000 settlement from companies distributing Eufy home security products after finding that ‘video streams from the cameras were not always securely encrypted and could be accessible to anyone with the relevant link without authentication.'”
The duo also claimed that the company targets potential military consumers by offering them 20% discounts on its Eufy products, including to a service member’s family.
“While these are retail sales, rather than direct Department of War procurement, the FCC has previously noted that the presence of high-risk network-connected devices in sensitive physical locations can constitute a security risk,” they added.
The lawmakers asked the FCC and Commerce Department to investigate the company and come up with a solution to how the U.S. government can protect American consumers from foreign surveillance through Anker and whether Anker does transmit data to its centers in China or to networks controlled by China.
