Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., on Sunday called the ongoing American strikes against Iran an “illegal war” and criticized the Trump administration for launching the operation without the consent of Congress.The administration began strikes this week, urging Iranians to overthrow their government. The initial volley killed Ayatollah Ali Khomeini and much of the senior Iranian leadership, though it failed to paralyze their military, which has launched retaliatory strikes across the Middle East, and inflicted American casualties.
Kaine is sponsoring a resolution in Congress aimed at limiting Trump’s operations in Iran.
“This is an illegal war. I have a War Powers Resolution queued up for a vote this week, and I’m encouraging my colleagues to assert the constitutional power vested in the legislative branch,” he said on Fox News. The measure is not expected to overcome a certain veto, should it even manage to pass both chambers.
Earlier on Sunday, Kaine’s fellow Virginia senator, Mark Warner, D, declared that he had not seen any intelligence to corroborate the claims of some administration officials that Iran was preparing pre-emptive strikes on the U.S.
Thus far, at least 3 American service members have died, with five more wounded.
