    Iran strikes oil tanker in Strait of Hormuz

    Iranian forces struck an oil tanker attempting to sail through the Strait of Hormuz on Sunday morning, marking the first major targeting of a merchant vessel in the critical waterway of the conflict.Video footage of the “Skylight,” showed the ship on fire, though the extent of the damage remains unclear. Recent public tracking data showed the vessel just north of the port of Khasab, which is part of the Omani enclave opposite the Iranian island of Qeshm.
    In apparent reference to the attack on the Skylight, the Saudi Foreign Ministry issued a statement in support of Oman, condemning what it called “blatant Iranian aggression.”
    The Strait of Hormuz is one of the busiest waterways in the world and the ongoing conflict with Iran threatens to shut down maritime traffic in the regional, a development that is likely to significantly affect oil and energy prices on a global scale.
