The multi-Grammy award-nominated singer of the 1960s hit “Breaking Up is Hard to Do,” Neil Sedaka died Friday in Los Angeles at the age of 86. Sedaka, who had nine Top 10 hits during his long career, was reportedly taken to the hospital Friday morning, but no details surrounding the cause of his death have been released, according to Deadline.
“Our family is devastated by the sudden passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather, Neil Sedaka,” his family said in a statement. “A true rock and roll legend, an inspiration to millions, but most importantly, at least to those of us who were lucky enough to know him, an incredible human being who will be deeply missed.”
The musician, who rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s, is also known for songs like “Calendar Girl,” and “Laughing in the Rain.”
Sedaka also famously co-wrote the hit songs “Stupid Cupid” for Connie Francis and “Love Will Keep Us Together,” for the Captain and Tennille, among others, according to the New York Times.
