Oklahoma GOP Gov. Kevin Stitt is praising the suspension of 122 students for participating in an anti-ICE classroom walkout.Mustang Public Schools suspended the students after they were warned against participating in the walkout, The Hill news outlet reported.
“I applaud Mustang Superintendent Dr. Charles Bradley,” Stitt posted on X on Wednesday. “Young Oklahomans: Free speech is sacred, but truancy robs your future. Stay in school, build skills, and make your voice heard responsibly.”
Mustang Public Schools said that students who chose to ignore the warning and participate in the walkout got in-school suspension for unexcused absences. Students who did not participate had classes as normal.
“Despite social media claims alleging adult involvement, district leadership reviewed all allegations and found no evidence that any Mustang Public Schools employee instigated, organized, or facilitated this student activity. Individuals identified in online posts as district employees were either not affiliated with Mustang Public Schools or were inaccurately represented,” the school district said.
Anti-ICE classroom walkouts have occurred across the U.S. after two protesters were killed by federal immigration authorities in Minneapolis.
