King Charles III announced Friday that he will be scaling back his cancer treatment in January as his health improves, claiming an “early diagnosis, effective intervention and adherence to doctors’ orders,” were behind the improvement.Buckingham Palace has not stated whether the king’s cancer was in remission, but told NBC News that the monarch had “responded exceptionally well” to treatment and that ongoing measures “will now move into a precautionary phase.”
The king was diagnosed with cancer in 2024, forcing him to step back from public duties for several months. His daughter-in-law Kate Middleton was also diagnosed with cancer that same year, but announced in January that she is in remission.
“This milestone is both a personal blessing and a testimony to the remarkable advances that have been made in cancer care,” Charles said in a televised message. “I know from my own experience that a cancer diagnosis can feel overwhelming. I [was] profoundly moved by what I can only call the ‘community of care’ that surrounds every cancer patient.”
The televised message was delivered in support of the Stand Up to Cancer charity campaign.
The king and Middleton have never disclosed what kind of cancer they were diagnosed with, or details about their treatments. But Middleton said she underwent chemotherapy for her cancer.
