In the wake of the Democrats’ successful flipping of a long-held GOP Texas state senate seat, one that President Trump won handily in 2024, many pundits expressed opinions about what happened and who was culpable (Republicans) or commendable (Democrats) for it. Of course, there were projections about what this might or might not herald for each party heading into the midterm elections. Hint: Few were sanguine about GOP prospects.
Moreover, there were a few discussions of how this new blue Texas state senate seat was a harbinger of the Democrats’ determined efforts to restore their party’s historical footholds within the Lone Star State. After all, there was an LBJ before a GHWB, and there was a Governor Ann Richards before a Governor George W. Bush (and later a president). Some observers believed the seat would revert to GOP hands in the fall, and others disagreed.
