Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky pushed the United States to do more to end the war in Europe, maintaining that the U.S. is the “only country” that can stop Russian aggression. The comment comes after President Donald Trump urged Zelensky to “get moving” on securing a peace deal with Russia, who he claimed wants to make a deal, and said if Zelensky does not move fast “he’ll miss a great opportunity.”
Zelensky told Politico he cannot agree to a peace deal with Russia without a national referendum because of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s demand to change Ukraine’s border, and that Ukrainians do not want an election now because it would be too difficult for citizens living overseas to vote.
“If President Trump will give me [an effort at] pushing Putin [for a] cease-fire for two, three months, we will do elections,” Zelensky said.
The Ukrainian leader also said the United States is the “only country that can stop Putin,” and claimed his country is the only one that is “defending Europe” from Russian aggression.
“Be honest, today only Ukraine [is] defending Europe,” Zelensky said. “Today, only Europe gives money to Ukraine and helps Ukraine. Today, only [the] United States can stop Putin.”
Zelensky made the comments at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.
