President Donald Trump said Friday that a change in Iranian leadership would be the “best thing that could happen” as tensions between the United States and the Middle Eastern country remain high. The president made the comment when asked about pushing for a regime change in Iran shortly after visiting Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. Trump also confirmed earlier Friday that he is deploying a second aircraft carrier group to the Middle East.
“It seems like that would be the best thing that could happen,” Trump told reporters, according to the Associated Press. “For 47 years, they’ve been talking and talking and talking.”
Trump has been weighing military action against Iran after its leaders cracked down on anti-regime protesters in Tehran, and has been pushing the country to scale back its nuclear program.
Iranian leadership warned last week that it would respond to any U.S. military attack by targeting American bases stationed across the Middle East.
