Finally, the North Carolina House has launched expulsion proceedings against Rep. Cecil Brockman (D-High Point), who was arrested in October 2025 on two counts each of indecent liberties with a child and statutory r*pe of a 15-year-old.
The Democratic representative is currently in jail and faces a bipartisan committee review led by Speaker Destin Hall, who says the allegations disqualify him if proven. While the process could well span weeks, North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein, a Democrat, will likely select a replacement for Brockman soon.
Summarizing his reaction to the horrible allegations against Brockman, House Speaker Destin Hall tried to focus on the system rather than the man, stating, “Obviously, it’s bad, and obviously, if those things are true, then he has no business serving in the state House.” Qualifying his remarks, he maintained the importance of due process. “He’s got a right to due process in the criminal court system. He’s got a right to some due process here as a member of the House. Those are probably different processes that will be gone through,” Hall added.
On the other side, issuing a clear denunciation, House Majority Leader Brenden Jones (R-Columbus) stated, “This behavior is appalling and has no place in the General Assembly. I am calling on Brockman’s resignation immediately.”
Frantically scrambling, the state Democratic party has done its best to distance itself from Brockman, writing, “The North Carolina Democratic Party calls on Representative Brockman to immediately resign. The profound seriousness of these criminal charges makes it impossible for him to effectively represent his community.”
Other Democrats, such as House Minority Leader Robert Reives (D-Chatham), joined the chorus of calls for Brockman to step down. “This is a developing situation, and it is important to let the legal process unfold. The allegations against Rep. Brockman are serious and, if true, would disqualify him from public office. As we continue to learn more about the allegations against Rep. Brockman this morning, it has become clear that he is unable to continue serving in the House of Representatives. Rep. Brockman must resign immediately,” Reives added.
Reacting to this shocking case, House Majority Leader Brenden Jones (R-Columbus) called for an immediate resignation. “This behavior is appalling and has no place in the General Assembly. I am calling on Brockman’s resignation immediately,” he declared.
