President Donald Trump on Friday made good on his promise to lower tariffs on India as part of a new trade agreement with the country this week, which saw India agree to stop purchasing Russian oil.The president signed an executive order that lowered reciprocal tariffs on India from 25% to 18% as agreed upon in a phone call with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, and removed tariffs on Indian aircrafts and aircraft parts.
“Out of friendship and respect for Prime Minister Modi and, as per his request, effective immediately, we agreed to a Trade Deal between the United States and India, whereby the United States will charge a reduced Reciprocal Tariff, lowering it from 25% to 18%,” Trump posted on Truth Social at the time. “They will likewise move forward to reduce their Tariffs and Non Tariff Barriers against the United States, to ZERO.”
The White House also outlined the framework trade agreement in a joint statement Friday, which includes India removing all tariffs on U.S. industrial goods and a variety of U.S. food and agricultural products.
“The Interim Agreement between the United States and India will represent a historic milestone in our countries’ partnership, demonstrating a common commitment to reciprocal and balanced trade based on mutual interests and concrete outcomes,” the joint statement reads.
The two countries added that they will continue to negotiate a “broader” bilateral trade agreement that will include additional market access commitments and support more resilient supply chains.
