NBC’s “TODAY” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie’s mother was reported missing in Arizona, with homicide detectives called out to process the scene.Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen Saturday night in her home outside Tucson, according to a missing persons flyer, NBC News reported. Her family reported her missing around noon Sunday, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said Monday.
Nanos said that aspects of the scene at the home caused “grave concern,” and confirmed that the disappearance is being treated as a crime because she could not walk more than 50 yards on her own because of mobility issues, CBS News reported.
“At this point, investigators believe she was taken from the home against her will, possibly in the middle of the night. Taken against her will includes possible kidnapping or abduction,” Nanos said at a press conference. “We saw some things at the home that were concerning to us. We believe now after we’ve processed that crime scene that we do in fact have a crime scene, that we do in fact have a crime, and we’re asking the community’s help.”
The sheriff also emphasized that Nancy Guthrie is of “sound mind” and that the disappearance was not “dementia-related, she is as sharp as a tack. The family wants everybody to know this isn’t somebody who just wandered off.”
“TODAY” show co-host Jenna Bush Hager reported on-air that Nancy Guthrie needs to take daily medication to survive.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is assisting, and the FBI is aware of the case.
Guthrie said in a statement on Monday, “[O]n behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers, and messages of support.”
“Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear mom. We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff’s Department at: 520-351-4900.”
Nancy Guthrie’s family last saw her at home around 9:30 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Nanos said.
The sheriff said that drones, an airplane, a helicopter, volunteers, and search-and-rescue dogs loaned from CBP were all scouring the area for Nancy Guthrie.
