rPresident Donald Trump threatened Thursday night to impose 50% tariffs on Canada on any aircraft sold in the United States, further escalating the ongoing trade war between the two neighboring countries. The move comes just days after Trump threatened to impose a 100% tariff on goods imported from Canada into the U.S. over Canada’s new partnership with China.
Trump said the new 50% tariffs were in response to Canada’s refusal to certify jets from the U.S.-based Gulfstream Aerospace, and that he would decertify all Canadian aircraft, including planes from its largest aircraft maker: Bombardier.
“Based on the fact that Canada has wrongfully, illegally, and steadfastly refused to certify the Gulfstream 500, 600, 700, and 800 Jets, one of the greatest, most technologically advanced airplanes ever made, we are hereby decertifying their Bombardier Global Expresses, and all Aircraft made in Canada, until such time as Gulfstream, a Great American Company, is fully certified,” Trump posted to Truth Social.
“Further, Canada is effectively prohibiting the sale of Gulfstream products in Canada through this very same certification process,” he continued. “If, for any reason, this situation is not immediately corrected, I am going to charge Canada a 50% Tariff on any and all Aircraft sold into the United States of America.”
The move also comes after Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney slammed economic coercion by large countries on smaller ones without specifically mentioning the president last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
