President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday touted what they deemed a “productive” call with one another as the pair continue to negotiate a lasting trade arrangement.Trump previously negotiated the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement with those countries, but has since sought to dramatically expand the scope of trade negotiations in the wake of his “Liberation Day” tariffs last year.
“I had a very productive telephone conversation with President Claudia Sheinbaum, of Mexico,” Trump posted on Truth Social. “It went extremely well for both Countries. Much of it was focused on the Border, stopping Drug Trafficking, and Trade. We will be speaking again, soon, and ultimately, setting up meetings in our respective Countries.”
“We held a productive and cordial conversation with the President of the United States, Donald Trump,” Sheinbaum said. “We continue to make progress on trade issues and the bilateral relationship.”
Despite Trump concluding agreements with major trading partners in the Pacific Rim, the UK, the EU, and other parts of the world, the Canadian and Mexican deals have been slow to formalize.
