President Donald Trump on Wednesday had harsh words for Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey after he indicated that local law enforcement would not assist federal immigration officers in the city.”Surprisingly, Mayor Jacob Frey just stated that, ‘Minneapolis does not, and will not, enforce Federal Immigration Laws,'” Trump posted on Truth Social. “This is after having had a very good conversation with him. Could somebody in his inner sanctum please explain that this statement is a very serious violation of the Law, and that he is PLAYING WITH FIRE!”
Frey made the remarks after speaking to both Trump and Border Czar Tom Homan, who arrived in the city amid the surge in immigration enforcement efforts.
Minneapolis has been a hotpsot for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids in the wake of revelations of large-scale public fraud linked to the Somali expat community in the area.
Trump previously indicated that he had spoken to both Frey and Gov. Tim Walz, D-Minn., about the prospects of cooperation and that the calls had been productive. Frey’s remarks appeared to prompt a reversal in tone.
