Police arrest 5 people in shooting of Indiana judge, wife

Indiana’s Lafayette Police Department has announced the arrested five people in the nonfatal shooting of an Indiana judge and his wife.The arrests were announced late Thursday, after Tippecanoe Superior Court Judge Steven Meyer was shot in the arm, and his wife, Kimberly, was struck in the hip on Sunday, The Hill news outlet reported. Following the shooting, Meyer said that he and his wife are improving with medical care.
While police have not revealed a motive, court records show that one of the suspects now charged with attempted murder, Thomas Moss, 43, was already facing felony charges in a different case before Meyer that was set for trial this week after several delays.
Lafayette police said that the arrests of Moss; Raylen Ferguson, 38; Blake Smith, 32; Amanda Milsap, 45; and Zenada Greer, 61, were the result of a “multi-state operation involving hundreds of investigative hours.”
Moss, Ferguson, and Smith face several charges, ranging from gang and firearm enhancements to attempted murder and conspiracy to commit murder. Milsap and Greer face two counts each, including obstruction of justice.
Moss, Smith, and Milsap are from Lafayette. Ferguson and Greer are from Kentucky.
Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Loretta Rush said Sunday after the shooting that she worries about the safety of all judges and urged them to be safe, calling any violence against a judge or their family “completely unacceptable.”
On Wednesday, Meyer said in a statement released by the court that the shooting had not weakened his faith in the U.S. judicial system.
“This horrific violence will not shake my belief in the importance of peacefully resolving disputes,” Meyer said. “I remain confident we have the best judicial system in the world, and I am proud to be a part of it.”
