President Donald Trump on Thursday predicted Democrats would block the passage of the government appropriations bills and force another shutdown. The deadline to fund the government stands at Jan. 30. As of now, only half of the twelve appropriations bills have cleared both chambers, according to The Hill. The annual cycle includes 12 bills that separately fund different government departments.
“I think we have a problem, because I think we’re going to probably end up in another Democrat shutdown,” Trump told Fox News on Thursday. Last year, a healthcare funding dispute led to the longest shutdown in American history.
A so-called “shutdown” occurs when the House fails to pass one or more of the appropriations bills to fund the government before the deadline. Typically, both chambers approve legislation to fund key programs, such as the military and entitlements, if they expect a dispute over some point of funding.
