On Tuesday, December 9, the City Council of Sudan, Texas (pop. 958) became the 88th city in the nation, and the 71st city in the State of Texas, to pass a Sanctuary City for the Unborn Ordinance. The “Ordinance Outlawing Abortion, declaring Sudan a Sanctuary City for the Unborn” passed in a unanimous 5-0 vote. The City of Sudan, located between the cities of Muleshoe (pop. 5,158) and Amherst (pop. 671), is the second city in Lamb County to consider and adopt a Sanctuary for the Unborn Ordinance, following the City of Olton (pop. 2,228).
The Sudan Sanctuary City for the Unborn Ordinance, which is enforced through a private right of action – just like the Texas Heartbeat Act, (1) prohibits performing an elective abortion and aiding or abetting elective abortions within the city limits of Sudan, (2) prohibits elective abortions on residents of Sudan – regardless of where the abortion takes place, (3) prohibits abortion trafficking through the City of Sudan, (4) prohibits the mailing of abortion-inducing drugs into the City of Sudan, (5) prohibits criminal organizations from doing business inside the city limits of Sudan, and (6) prohibits through or in the City of Sudan the transportation and disposal of the remains of unborn children who have been killed by an elective abortion across state lines and carried into Texas by waste management companies.
