Vice President JD Vance helped Senate Republicans Wednesday night defeat a War Powers resolution that would constrain President Donald Trump’s ability to pursue military actions in Venezuela. The vote reverses actions taken by the chamber earlier this month, after five Republicans joined Democrats in backing the plan. Sens. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, Susan Collins of Maine, Josh Hawley of Missouri, Rand Paul of Kentucky, and Todd Young of Indiana initially voted with Democrats.
Hawley and Young both flipped in Wednesday’s vote after facing pusback from President Donald Trump, bringing the vote to an even 50-50 split. Vance broke the deadlock by casting the tie-breaking vote in favor of the resolution’s dismissal.
